What are some of specific treatments for male infertility?
Treatment of male fertility is basically based on the sperm count. If the count is less than 10 million/ml hormone tests and chromosomal tests are suggested in the male . Usually in this group the advanced treatment called ICSI-intra cytoplasmic sperm injection is suggested as the treatment option. In some men there are no sperm in the semen-azoospermia and in these men, using a small needle sperm is directly obtained from the testes and used in the ICSI procedure to produce embryo. In men with borderline low sperm count, if hormones are on the lower side or normal then oral medications and hormone injections might be tried to see whether it might increase the sperm count. If the count does not improve with 3 months of medication, In this group of men, IUI or if that fails IVF is the way forward to achieve a pregnancy. In some men in spite of having a normal sperm count also pregnancy is not established and this may be due to increase in sperm DNA fragmentation
